There were in existence five different types of Kalaries to suit different purposes; Kurum-Kalari for guerrilla-training; AnkaKalari - for duels, Cheru-Kalari- for treatment, Kodum-Kalari for meditation and Kurum - Kalari for teaching the science of Marma (Vital-points) and Kuzhi-Kalari (Pit - Kalari) for the everyday training of practitioners. This is the type of Kalari still in existence in Kerala today for the practice of Kalari-Payat.
The Kalari (training ground) is constructed 42 ft east to west and 21 ft north to south. The measurement is the foot span of the Gurukkal (master) of the Kalari. The ground is dug 3 ft deep, with a 3 ft wall constructed all around. A roof of bamboo is thatched over with coconut leaves, which blends with the natural surroundings, and in harmony with the climatic conditions of the place. The floor is disinfected with herbs, oils, and natural pigments so that no skin problems arise due to the bare bodied training done in the Kalari.

The entrance to the Kalari is -on the eastern side, with three steps leading down to the Kalari. In the south-west comer of the Kalari is constructed a seven tiered platform with a conical shape known as "Poothara", symbolising the subtle and gross concepts of the universe and the human being in general. A flower or a lighted lamp placed on the top most platform serves as a point of focus for eye exercises and concentration training known as "Trataka" in Yoga. By the side of the Poothara, on the western side, two more platforms are constructed which symbolize the seat of past masters known as "Guru- Thara" and another seat known as "Ganapathi- Thara", the seat of Lord Ganesh, who is the "Lord of Obstruction", or the lord who helps you to remove the negative thinking of your mind.

All the weapons are kept on a wooden stand at the western side of the Kalari. The master stands on the western side while giving instructions to the students, who begin their exercises from the eastern side. The exercises are generally not practiced in a north-south direction, since according to the science of yoga and Ayurveda, the magnetic field of the north pole is harmful to health, when facing it directly.
